We welcome Tammy Wallace Wood, Critical Care Transport Manager for Boston Med Flight, to discuss all things med flight nursing. More commonly known as transport nursing, these are the teams that show up during some of life's most emergent situations, with their flight suits and emergency equipment to help patients get to a better and more capable facility.
Starting career in the ICU, and then adding time in the ED, Tammi moved to a transport career in 2000 with Flight for Life crew in Colorado and now is an education manager, float base leader and Administrator on call for Boston Medflight in Massachusetts.
Tammy talks about her journey from ER clerk to flight nurse, the importance of ER and ICU experience, and the diverse responsibilities of transport nursing, highlighting the ability to handle critically ill patients in various transport modes. The use of medical devices, family inclusion during transport, and the demanding nature of the job, will help you learn more about if this career path is for you. It's a career requiring high skill levels, flexibility, and safety protocols, and we talk about the risks and rewards of working in medical transport, and the profound impact on patients' lives. Tammy expresses gratitude for caring for patients during critical moments and the importance of continuous training and collaboration with hospital teams.
